In the last article I stressed how important it is to do some internal exploration about what you enjoy as the first step to finding a profitable niche. I suggested that you make a list of all those interests.
It doesn’t really matter how many things you were able to come up with, the highly profitable niche you are looking for is already somewhere on that list.
Now it’s time to look outside yourself and see what’s actually going on in the marketplace.
At this point you shouldn’t be too concerned about what you’re going to sell this crowd, rather you should be worrying about WHO you will be selling to.
Because as great an idea as you may think you have it won’t make you a dime if there aren’t a sizable group of real people out there who are also interested in that subject matter.
So once you have that list of interests type in those subjects into websites like Technorati and Amazon’s bestseller list, Ebay and Youtube. What you’re looking for are signs of life in that marketplace. See if people are talking about your area of interest. Are people advertizing with products related to that field? Are people blogging about your topic? Are they making videos?
Your work is not over yet, but this simple test should give you a solid idea about whether the market’s you’ve chosen are worth your time of day.
If you only worry about what you enjoy, and don’t worry about what other people are interested out there’s a good chance your business will fail before it even get’s started.
One other important tip is to not be discouraged. When you do this research you’re bound to see people with established products and websites and lots of competition.
Believe it or not this is actually a GOOD thing. This means that someone else has already done the market research and found out that there are plenty of buyers in this market. And don’t view them as competition at all. View them as potential partners with whom you can cross promote each other’s products once you’re product is ready.
